Bags of Love
Last year, I worked in a middle school near my mother’s house, and I stayed with her for a month. During that time, I helped her do some housework and buy some food.
After the first week, I noticed that the food was eaten up very quickly. Then I began keeping an eye on my mum. To my surprise, I found that she would put some of the food into a paper bag and go out with it at about nine every morning. And finally, I decided to follow her. I saw her taking the food to the street children. She would also spend a lot of time talking and playing with them.
One day, I talked to a neighbor and found out that my mum was well-known in the area. The children were very friendly with her and even thought of her as their own mother. Then it hit me – why wouldn’t she want to tell me about it? Was she worried that I would stop buying food if I found out?
When my mum got home, I gave her a big hug (拥抱).I told her she didn’t need to keep it a secret from me. And she told me something about the children. Some of them lived with an old lady in a small house. Others slept on the street. For years, she was helping the poor street children by giving them food. After she told me everything, I was so moved by how selfless (无私的) she was. She helped others in need. As her son, I was so proud of my mum.
I continued to buy food for my mum after that. But I always added one more bag for her other children.

Driving in the U.S. can be difficult to understand not just because of all the rules and laws that drivers must follow, but also because of driving customs. Many people in the U.S. really depend on their cars to get to work and school. In fact most American workers spend an hour driving to work each day. In order to drive in the U.S., you have to go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles first, and take a written test to get your learner’s permit. If you pass this test, you can practice driving so you can pass a road test and get your license. The Department of Motor Vehicles has free booklets you can get to study for your learner’s permit. You can also get the information online and even take a practice written exam. To prepare for the road test, you can have a friend teach you to drive or pay to take classes at a driving school. You cannot, however, practice driving by yourself. If you are caught driving with only a learner’s permit, you can get into trouble with the law.
Once you get your driver’s license in one state, you can use it to drive in all of the United States. Wherever you drive, you will see signs posted along the road showing the speed limit. These numbers are not a suggestion. Generally you can drive faster on a highway than on local streets. Local police use special equipment to discover your speed. If they discover you are speeding or driving over the speed limit, police can stop you and give you a ticket. You will have to pay a fine which may be more than $100. The lines painted on the road are not just to keep cars in their lanes. They send a message. For example, a double solid yellow line means that it is against the law to pass another car here.

C.you will have to pay a fine $100 or moreD.you cannot drive your car anymore

A.Most Americans go to work in their cars every day.
B.If you only have a learner’s permit, you can’t drive it by yourself.

D.If you drive your car in the double solid yellow line, you are against the law.

Captain(船长)Nemo invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the captain. “But these forests are under the sea.”
After going through a door, we were about ten meters under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We were going deeper and deeper. At 100 meters deep, we could see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed, and all their “branches” were vertical(垂直的).We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest.
Suddenly, I saw a large sea spider about a meter tall. It was going to attack me. Captain Nemo’s man killed it with his gun, but it reminded me that the sea could be as dangerous as it was beautiful. When we reached 150 meters, it was dark. The sun’s light could not reach this depth(深度). We turned our lights. We could see about 20 meters around us. Finally, we found Crespo Island—where a steep rock wall rose in front of us.
We could go no further, so we walked back toward the Nautilus. Suddenly, Captain Nemo stopped and shot an animal with his gun, it was a beautiful and rare sea otter. At last, we could see the Nautilus. Several large sharks swam over us. Luckily they didn’t see us. We re-entered the Nautilus safely. I was tired but amazed by what I had seen.

The most awful words in the English language are, "Our computer is down." You hear it more and more when you are on business. The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, "I'm sorry, I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down."
"If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket."
"I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so."
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and looking at the black screen. Then I asked her, "What do all you people do?"
"We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not."
"So when it goes down, you go down with it."
"That's good, sir."
"How long will the computer be down?" I wanted to know.
"I have no idea. Sometimes it's down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There's no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it's down it won't answer us."
After the girl told me they had no backup (备用) computer, I said. "Let's forget the computer. What about your planes? They're still flying, aren't they?"
"I couldn't tell without asking the computer."
"Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he's flying to Washington," I suggested.
"I wouldn't know what gate to send you to. Even if the pilot was going to Washington, he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket."
"Is there any other airline(航空公司) flying to Washington within the next few hours?"
"I wouldn't know," she said, pointing at the dark screen. "Only 'IT' knows. 'It' can't tell me."
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white, some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage (行李).

Tim Berners-Lee is not the most famous inventor in the world. However, his invention has changed our lives.
He was born in London, England in 1955. When he was a small boy, Tim was interested in playing with electrical things. He studied science at Oxford University. He made his first computer from an old television at the age of 21.
Tim started working on early computers. At that time, they were much bigger than now. He worked in England then Switzerland. Tim was really interested in two things, computers and how the brain works. How could the brain connect so many facts so quickly? He had to work with people all over the world. They shared information about computers. It was hard to manage all the information. He answered the same questions again and again. It took a lot of time. It was even difficult for computers in the same office in Switzerland to share information. Tim also forgot things easily. Could a computer work like a brain? Could it “talk” to other computers?
There was an Internet already but it was difficult to use. In 1989, Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web(WWW)all by himself. This had a special language that helped computers talk to each other on the Internet. When people wanted to share information with others, they used the World Wide Web. The Internet grew quickly after that.
Tim Berners-Lee doesn’t think he did anything special. He says that all of the ideas about the Internet were already there. All he did was to put them together. He says that many other people worked together to make the Internet what it is today.
Most inventors want to become rich. But Tim gave away the World Wide Web for nothing. He now works in America. He helps people share technology and wants the Internet to be free for everyone to use. Maybe he is the most important but least famous inventor in the world today!

“One father is worth more than a hundred schoolmaster,” Britain poet George Herbert once said. Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, agrees.
When he was a little kid, Gates was silent and hated to talk with others. He spent most of his time alone—reading books and thinking. To help his son, Gates’ father held family meetings and let him play simple games with family members. “These activities seemed silly but they improved my leading and working-together abilities,” Gates said later.
While mothers offer a more gentle kind of love, fathers teach qualities like independence(独立), confidence, courage and adventure(冒险). Children learn these things from their fathers when they play sports or games together.
British scientists showed that children who grow up without their fathers may have many problems. They may not have enough courage for facing difficulties, may be shy and worried or may even commit crimes(犯罪).
A caring father can help children get along well with others. Fathers not only lead their children into social circles but also teach them how to behave and control their feelings. Moreover, fathers let you know who you are. They lead you to learn what you should be like as a girl or a boy.
