Not every parent looks forward to the day when their child goes off to school. In fact, some parents are not sending their students to school at all. Instead they are choosing to teach their children at home. This is called homeschooling. Parents educate children individually at home instead of sending them off to be formally educated in public or private schools. In the U.S., only about three percent of children are homeschooled.
There are many reasons why some parents choose to homeschool. One reason is that some parents do not feel their children are safe in school because of bullying (恃强凌弱). Others parents want their child’s education to be based on their religion or moral beliefs. Yet other parents feel like the education in school is not good enough. Homeschooling is also seen as a choice for families that live in rural areas, and families that travel, like actors.
There are many different ways to homeschool, and homeschooling allows parents to customize (订制) lessons based on their children’s needs. Families can buy textbooks to use or write their own materials. Some parents who follow a philosophy (信条) called unschooling, which allows a child to decide when, and how they want to learn based on their natural curiosity (好奇心). Some worry that homeschooling means students won’t have chances to socialize. To answer this worry, some families have set up cooperatives, where a group of homeschooled students will learn and play together and take part in activities that would usually happen in school like field trips and dance parties.
Being homeschooled doesn’t mean a student cannot go to college. Most colleges accept homeschooled students. It is important, however, for parents and students to create a set of things to prove what has been learned.

PowerPoint Presentations(PPT)are taking the place of writing on the blackboard with chalk. Someday, will robots take the place of human teachers?
In Japan, a robot is going to enter classrooms to help teachers. Last week the Japanese company Honda Motor Co. showed the public its robot at a Tokyo museum. The robot’s name is Asimo. Students will see Asimo in science classes and learn the wonders of science.
Asimo is 130 centimeters tall with a round head. It can jog, walk up stairs and wave. It can also avoid things on its way and have simple talks with you. Asimo is an experienced worker for humans. It has worked as a guide in showrooms. But this will be the first time it works as a teaching assistant in classrooms and in formal teaching!
How will Asimo help in class? A teacher explained the way Asimo works to students in last week’s show. Asimo has sensors(感应器)inside its body to keep its balance.
The smart Asimo tilted(倾斜)its body when it stood on a shaking platform(平台). Asimo kept its balance. But a wooden person beside Asimo fell (See the above picture).
When you walk, you pass your weight from the heel to the toe. The Japanese teacher explained this with Asimo at the museum. He moved the robot in slow move. Asimo made learning science more interesting for students!
Asimo will soon help teach thousands of primary students and junior high schools in two Japanese cities. Hopefully, robot teachers will arrive in our classrooms in China one day.

Anger is a natural reaction(反应) which comes out when we feel that we have not been treated fairly. The good side of this negative emotion(负面情绪)is that it has helped us to shape and improve our manners. However it will become a problem if we can’t control it. For example, sometimes it happens that your anger hurts others or breaks your friendship and you regret later. It is also bad for the health.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger, it can make more trouble. So tell someone that is close to you, a friend or a family member about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance to solve your problems. Besides, to be humorous is a good choice to reduce your anger. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is out of control, you can use humor. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger makes us have a lot of negative thoughts. So we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this, you must say ‘No’ to all the negative thoughts in your mind first. This can be done with a lot of practice. When you are successful in that, you have to think only about positive things of life.
Meditation(冥想)is an excellent anger management way. What’s more, what we do is to keep ourselves from the outer world, and just care about the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that can cause anger.

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions according what you’ve read.
In most towns today, you can see teenagers standing over electronic machines with flashing lights, shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters. The machines have names like Space Warrior, Dark Invader and so on. It used to be believed that damage was done only to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back.
Many teenagers like electronic games so much that they can't stop playing. They spend hours tightly holding the joystick controls and constantly pressing buttons marked” fire”. They develop pains on their fingers because of the constant pressure. They play and play so that the pains have no chance to cure properly. The rapid wrist movement required to guide the spaceship across the screen causes another problem: The muscles of the wrist and arm become so inflamed (发炎的)and swollen that they press against the bones. This condition is what doctors now call "Space Warrior's Wrist". Other strange aches and pains also are likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.
Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently in the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours a day. Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop as often as she liked. Doctors who examined her found she was suffering from an unusual illness caused by lights flashing at a particular frequency.

Read the passage carefully and complete the table with only one word for each blank.
Mayme Clayton collected books, magazines and letters written by African Americans. Her son, Avery Clayton, thought her collection was important. Unlike most books, these were rare and hard to find. They were written by writers who helped shape African American culture.
One book in the collection was written by Phillis Wheatley. Wheatley was a slave who wrote poetry.  She was the first African American to publish a book. Wheatley herself signed (签名) the book in the Claytons’ collection. No one else owns a copy signed by Phillis Wheatley.
By the time she passed away at age 83, Mrs. Clayton had more than 30,000 books by or about black people. Her collection also includes papers about slaves, photographs, movies, sheet music, and personal letters by black leaders and artists. It is one of the biggest personal collections of African American history and culture in the United States.
Avery Clayton’s dream was to create a museum for his mother’s treasures. Scholars say that Mrs. Clayton’s collection is very important. Without her work, part of African American heritage (遗产) would have been lost. “We didn’t know these things existed,” says Sara Hadron of California’s Huntington Library.
The collections new home is likely to be in Culver City, California. Part of Avery Clayton’s dream is to share the cultural riches his mother collected with others. He especially wants kids to have a chance to see the collection. “At present African American culture is being explained by pop culture,” he says, “It’s important to offer a more complete picture.”

Black Friday

Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Some items (商品)like TVs and cloths are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to go shopping. However, there are problem. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced items. Each store may only have a few. These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.
The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day “Big Friday”. It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday events. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of discounts every year. They call it “El Buen Fin”, which means “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.
